Houses of Parliament

The heart of British democracy

The Palace of Westminster

The Houses of Parliament, officially known as the Palace of Westminster, is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The current building, designed by Charles Barry in Gothic Revival style, was completed in 1870 after a fire destroyed the original medieval palace in 1834.

The site has been home to English Parliament since 1295, making it one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world.
